Shipping Meme: Supernatural

For this shipping meme.  Atuin asked: Supernatural!

  • otp

My OTP would have to be Dean/Cas; it’s the only one I read with any regularity.  (Though, that might be because it has the most material of all my pairings.)  It probably gives me the most feelings.  You can find my lengthy analysis of them here.  It’s not an OTP in the sense that I refuse to ship either of them with anyone else.  It’s just takes more to convince me otherwise.

  • favorite canon pairing

John/Mary—especially in the Back to the Future episode.  They were so cute.  Can I just take a moment to talk about how badass Mary Campbell is?  She’s fucking awesome.  And her character progression strikes me as the antithesis to Jo Harding, who is also kickass—but that’s tangent for another time.  Supernatural doesn’t really do a good job of handling canon romance well, so yeah… John/Mary.

  • worst pairing ever

I’m going to have to take the opportunity to say that Sam/Ruby came out of nowhere for me.  Maybe that’s b/c I’ve skipped around the episodes.  I mean, I can understand the whole deal with Sam needing a friendly shoulder when Dean was in Hell, and I can understand both character’s motivations (I have really interesting thought about when Ruby became Lilith’s bitch), I just don’t like that it happened at all. Perhaps it’s b/c I don’t like Ruby 2.0.  Correction:  I don’t mind Gen’s demon.  It was just such a drastic difference from Season 3 Ruby.  (Which is part of the reason why I have so many thoughts regarding Ruby’s betrayal.)  But yeah, the abrupt transition from badass warrior to seductress killed any fondness I might have mustered for the pairing.  It’s not the “worst” pairing, but it’s one of my least favourite.

  • best pairing

I’m not sure how this is different from two of the above questions, so I’m going to use this space to talk about the really obscure pairings I like.  If any of you wanted to make me some fic or fanart, I would love you forever.  And ever and ever and ever.

Firstly, there’s Meg/Jo. Why yes, this does stem from that one time Meg possessed Sam’s body and kidnapped Jo. I have so much love for both of these ladies.  (Meg is my second favourite character, and Jo and Cas vie for third place depending on my mood.)  Sadly, most of the fic out there has some element of non-con, which is not my cup of tea. In an ideal world, Jo would make the first move, surprising the shit out of Meg. I like the idea of Jo establishing some form of dominance early on.  Plus, a fight scene between these two would be amazing.

Secondly, Alice wanted ton know my preferred Crowley pairing, since I told her that Bobby/Crowley isn’t my favourite.  I actually like Sam/Crowley a lot.  My shipping relationship with Sam is super weird.  I don’t actually believe that he’s anything other than straight, canon-wise., yet I ship with Crowley.  Don’t ask me how that works.  I shamelessly take advantage of my confidence in Sam’s heterosexuality to ship him with nearly every male character—Gabriel, Cas, you name it. But Sam/Crowley is my absolute fave.  Do I really have to go into why I ship them here, b/c that is an essay in itself?  I leave you with this: to whom else does Crowley give cute little pet names?

  • creepiest pairing

Let’s see… How about Famine/anyone.  No, thank you.

  • That pairing everyone likes but you’re like, “LOL, no.”

I don’t really care for wincest.  It’s not that it totally squicks me.  I realize that if I has entered the fandom pre-Season 4 (i.e., when Castiel was introduced), I would have shipped it, but I didn’t, so I don’t.  It saves me the trouble of analyzing my morals, which is always a good thing for me.  I do like the idea of the “Terrible Life” Verse Dean Smith/Sam Wesson—guilt-free wincest.  Also, I rather like wincest-free Dean/Cas/Sam.  If that even makes sense to you.

tl;dr  - DAzebras ships herself with Mary, Jo, and Meg.

Re: One Playlist, One Pairing — John/Mary from Supernatural?

Oh, Alice.  Why did you do this to me?  You had to pick the most difficult pairing ever, didn’t you?  When I said John/Mary is my fave canon pairing, I didn’t mean I had a ready-made playlist I could pick five songs off.  I meant I hate all the other canon pairings.  It certainly didn’t help that I established all sorts of rules to complicate things for myself.  I decided first that I wanted the playlist to describe all phases of their relationship, from meeting to Mary’s deal with Azazel to the period after her death.  Fine.  Only then I decided it would be great if the songs were all era appropriate, meaning a song describing the beginning of their relationship would have been recorded in the late Sixties and a song about John’s mourning would be from post-1983.  So, yeah.  Unnecessary complications.

“I Saw Her Standing There” by the Beatles (1963)

1 - 2 - 3 - 4!

Well, she was just 17,
You know what I mean,
And the way she looked was way beyond compare.
So how could I dance with another (ooh)
When I saw her standin’ there.

Well she looked at me, and I, I could see
That before too long I’d fall in love with her.
She wouldn’t dance with another (whooh)
When I saw her standin’ there.

Well, my heart went “boom,”
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine…

Well, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now, I’ll never dance with another (whooh)
When I saw her standing there

Well, my heart went “boom,”
When I crossed that room,
And I held her hand in mine…

Oh, we danced through the night,
And we held each other tight,
And before too long I fell in love with her.
Now I’ll never dance with another (whooh)
Since I saw her standing there  [3x]

I really, really didn’t want to use this song.  Mostly because it’s the Beatles.  One of the things I like best about making playlists is the opportunity to introduce people to new music; a well-known Beatles song has no place on a playlist.  Also, this son doesn’t do everything I want it to.  Remember how John and Mary hated each other until that cupid made them fall in love?  I tried to find a song to fit that, but this is the closest I could get, especially with the chronology constraints.  This one does at least half the job of expressing John’s feelings immediately post-arrow—he sees her and falls in love out of nowhere.  Unfortunately, the song gives a more “love at first sight” vibe.  (Also, it was the first song on The Beatles’ debut album, so it’s a good song to fit beginnings, but that didn’t actually factor into my decision process.)

“I Think We’re Alone Now” by Tommy James & the Shondells (1967)

Children, behave,
That’s what they say when we’re together,
And watch how you play,
They don’t understand,
And so we’re,

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin’ onto one another’s hand,
Tryin’ to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we’re alone now,
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

Look at the way,
We gotta hide what we’re doin’.
‘Cause what would they say,
If they ever knew and so we’re,

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin’ onto one another’s hand,
Tryin’ to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we’re alone now,
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we’re alone now,
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

[Instrumental break]

Running just as fast as we can,
Holdin’ onto one another’s hand,
Tryin’ to get away into the night,
And then you put your arms around me,
And we tumble to the ground,
And then you say,

I think we’re alone now,
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we’re alone now,
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we’re alone now,(alone now)
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,(alone now)
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we’re alone now,(alone now)
There doesn’t seem to be anyone around.
I think we’re alone now,(alone now)
The beating of our hearts is the only sound.

I think we’re alone now,(alone now)…

This is a fun one from the time they were dating before that crazy shit in 4.03 “In the Beginning”.  I picked it because I imagine the two of them would have done some sneaking around with how much Samuel Campbell disliked John.

Childhood’s End” by Pink Floyd (1972)

You shout in your sleep

Perhaps the price is just too steep

Is your conscience at rest

If once put to the test?

You awake with a start

To just the beating of your heart

Just one man beneath the sky

Just two ears

Just two eyes

You set sail across the sea

Of long past thoughts and memories

Childhood’s end

Your fantasies

Merge with harsh realities

And then as the sail is hoist

You find your eyes are growing moist

And all the fears never voiced

Say you have to make your final choice

Who are you and who am I

To say we know the reason why?

Some are born

Some men die

Beneath one infinite sky

There’ll be war

There’ll be peace

But everything one day will cease

All the iron turned to rust

All the proud men turned to dust

And so all things, time will mend

So this song will end

This one’s set in the moments surrounding Mary’s deal with Old Yellow Eyes.  She dreamed of being able to run away with John and live a normal life, and she can have something akin to that now but at what cost? Her whole family’s dead.  She only has ten years to live a fairy tale life like the past hour never happened.  Recorded the year before 4.03 was set but it’s close enough.  Also, I think it’s mandatory to have some sort of Pink Floyd on a Supernatural playlist.

Ghost by Indigo Girls (1992)

There’s a letter on the desktop that I dug out of a drawer
The last truce we ever came to from our adolescent war
And I start to feel the fever of the warm air through the screen
You come regular like seasons shadowing my dreams

The Mississippi’s mighty, but it starts in Minnesota
At a place where you can walk across with five steps down
And that’s just how you started like a pinprick to my heart
But at this point you rush right through me and I start to drown

There’s not enough room in this world for my pain
Signals crossed and love gets lost and time passed makes it plain
Of all my demon spirits I need you the most
I’m in love with your ghost
I’m in love with your ghost

Dark and dangerous like a secret it gets whispered in a hush (don’t tell a soul)
And when I wake the things I dreamt about you last night make me blush (don’t
tell a soul)
When you kiss me like a lover and you sting me like a viper
I go follow to the river play your memory like the piper

And I feel it like a sickness how this love is killing me
But I would walk into the fingers of your fire willingly
Dance the edge of sanity I’ve never been this close
In love with your ghost

Unknowing captor you’ll never know how much you
Pierce my spirit but I can’t touch you
Can you hear it a cry to be free
Oh I’m forever under lock and key
As you pass through me

Now I see your face before me I would launch a thousand ships
To bring your heart back to my island as the sand beneath me slips
I burn up in your presence and I know now how it feels
To be weakened like Achilles with you always at my heels

This bitter pill to swallow is the silence that I keep
It poisons me I can’t swim free the river is too deep
Though I’m baptized by your touch I am no worse at most
In love with your ghost

In love with your ghost
In love with your ghost
You are shadowing my dreams

So I know that when you think Supernatural, you don’t typically thing Indigo Girls.  But this one really does do one of the best jobs describing what I imagine is John’s mourning after Mary’s death.  Also, I really like the transition from the “And so all things, time will mend” from “Childhood’s End” to the “Time passed makes it plain of all my demon spirits I need you the most” of this song.

1973 by James Blunt (2007)

Simone
You’re getting older
Your journey’s been
Etched on your skin

Simone
Wish I had known that
What seemed so strong
Has been and gone

[Chorus:]
I would call you up every Saturday night
And we both stayed out ‘til the morning light
And we sang, “Here we go again”
And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973
Singing “Here we go again”

Simone
Wish I was sober
So I could see clearly now
The rain has gone

Simone
I guess it’s over
My memory plays our tune
The same old song

[Chorus x3]

And though time goes by
I will always be
In a club with you
In 1973

This song allowed me to boot off Hootie & the Blowfish which I am aware is blasphemous to include on a Supernatural playlist.  Admittedly, James Blunt isn’t a whole lot better.  But really, it fit too perfectly not to include.  It’s got the whole time motif going for it, and more importantly, 1973 is the year John proposed, the year Mary made her deal.  Really wish this song had been put out in 2005 instead since John died in 2006, but we can’t have everything.

Hope you enjoy!

Mary has been dead for three years. She doesn’t know that Sammy has learned the alphabet, and likes to catch bugs. She doesn’t know that Dean watches his little brother like a hawk every minute, with an expression on his face that says he’s willing to die to keep Sammy safe.
